How Does a Signal Relay Work?

At its heart, a signal relay is an electromechanical switch. It consists of a coil (the input side), an armature, a spring, and one or more sets of contacts (the output side). When a small voltage is applied to the coil, it generates a magnetic field that pulls the armature, overcoming the spring force. This physical movement opens or closes the electrical contacts, thereby connecting or interrupting the circuit on the output side. This mechanism provides complete galvanic isolation between the low-voltage control circuit and the switched signal circuit, protecting sensitive logic components from voltage spikes, noise, and potential faults on the load side.
